Be a GIVER April 16, 2018 by Megan ShaughnessyOver the years, I often wondered what my purpose was, my greatness, the way I would impact the world. How could I give more of me so my time would be used to help others? Then I started my own business and now, I feel like I am HOME. That feeling of wanting more, knowing this was not the end job, was gone. I recently started reading “The Go Giver, Sell More,” and I think I figured it out, network marketing and sales. Yep, I said it, SALES. Who would imagine that having others buy something from me would have such a profound effect, but it does, and not in the way you would imagine. I love the GIVING part of it. Helping others, giving value to others, and seeing the benefits come back to me in ways I never imagined. About a year ago, I remember meeting a group of amazing women. One after another had started or were working in their own businesses. I found myself connecting with each of them individually. Each meeting would end with me connecting them with someone I knew that could help them grow their business. Some I simply sent info to when I ran across topics that made me think of them. I was sending messages asking about open houses and congratulating new promotions. I just loved the group setting! A funny thing happened a few months later. Without asking, each one of them reached out and ordered my products. They loved what they tried and I even found myself hearing from some of them, “if I ever am looking for a new business to join, I want to work with you!” How amazing! Me? I was floored. What had I done to receive all of this? I just gave them what they needed! In turn that giving came back to me even more. After all, “Money is simply an echo of value!” So how can we add value to others lives, give more, and in turn, get more sales? Here are a few simple ways I have found to get started. Start small: like NIKE says, just do it! Pay for someone’s coffee behind you in line, leave an extra $5 on a tip for a great waiter, leave $1 taped to a vending machine. Just GIVE and you will realize that it is NOT selfless. It feels amazing. Giving can have the most powerful effect on mood, energy, and just happiness. And who knows, the person you give to may just remember you the next time they NEED what you are selling! Give before you receive: this is a tough for some, but not for everyone. When I meet someone and start chatting, my mind immediately goes into “helping” mode. Do I know someone they know so we can connect on a deeper level? Are they complaining about their daycare and need other options? Do they struggle with places to go for date night? By giving first and helping others, it makes them think of you in a positive way… and guess what? The next time they NEED what you are selling they will call you! Listen: this is a tough one for those of us who love to talk, but it can make a huge difference in your business. Give your attention, time, eye contact, and watch how easy it is to give back to others. Listening can be the window into hearing just what the other person needs. Show empathy: truly listening and understanding where people’s pain points are, can be a huge way to give back. Meeting them where their feelings are, and helping them to be ok with it can be powerful. Not every conversation needs a “fix.” Sometimes just understanding is enough. These are great ways to start giving more in your everyday life. I have found that simply following the idea of being a giver has changed my business is major ways. It is always important to remember, above anything else, in sales and in giving – it is not about you, it is about them! When that falls into place, you will realize where you can make the biggest impact! Now go out, give, and watch your greatness appear!
