In with the new January 21, 2019 by Jill GanskeLast summer we sold our home of more than 12 years and moved into my husband’s garage to begin the adventure of building our dream home. This meant packing. Oh so much packing. And because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to unpack many of those boxes for a substantial amount of time, I had to be incredibly mindful of what was REALLY a priority. We are living in less than 700 square feet now, after being in 3,000 and it has been incredibly freeing! (Don’t get me wrong… I’m super excited for my giant kitchen that will eventually come with the new house.) I have had to LET GO not just of things, but of the hold that certain objects, tasks or thoughts can have on you. I had to be done with the mindset of want, and focus on what was NEEDED and what brought true JOY. So out went the clothes that hardly ever were worn. Out went the 34 hair styling tools. Out went the pairs upon pairs of shoes I hardly ever wore. Out went the 16 mixing bowls and 7 rubber scrapers… And in came simplicity. In came the ability to clean my entire home in two hours. In came more time to play games with my girls and go on dates with my husband. In came peace. If you’re searching for a new sense of peace this year, I encourage you to simplify. Out with the old, the overwhelming, the excess… and in with the new.
