On beginning… October 18, 2017 by Jamie WestermanReady, set, go… If only it was so easy. Why is taking the first step into something new SO tough? Starting a new job, a new relationship, a new endeavor… even when it’s needed or wanted can be paralyzing. What is it that makes us hesitate? And what would happen if people didn’t have the courage to begin? Well I wouldn’t be writing a blog for one thing. I would never have started graduate school to become a nurse practitioner. I would never have started a business I knew nothing about. Before each of those leaps, I had an overwhelming sense of fear about taking on something that felt so challenging. I was terrified really. I remember getting accepted into grad school and literally thinking SH*T, now what?! I didn’t have a clue how to make it happen with two kids and a job and a crappy marriage. I started my business with the preconceived notion that I would be a terrible entrepreneur and I was just going to do it for fun (setting myself up so I couldn’t fail because it wasn’t a REAL business). I had never participated in direct sales let alone taken a nutritional supplement before so “selling” was not on my mind. I began my blog and wasn’t even sure I wanted to share it for fear that I would be judged or ignored. Which by the way could quite possibly be happening right now! Terrified still! Feelings are the driver behind every choice that we make. We like to believe we can think things through, weigh the pros and cons, and make well thought out decisions. And that certainly can be part of the process. BUT, it will always be the feelings, the heart, that lead you to your decisions. They may not be the right ones but it will be feelings guiding you. They will either hold you back or propel you into action. Whether you LISTEN to those feelings and acknowledge them is what will make all the difference. When I was feeling fear about going back to school, I was also feeling a desire to follow my dream of being a patient care provider. I knew if I followed through I would feel proud and accomplished and those feelings were more important to me than the fear. How do we choose to follow the feelings that will guide us to our best selves? That will drive our finest decisions? Recently I learned about a tool that in just a couple of weeks is already BLOWING MY DAMN MIND! You want to listen to your gut, shut down your fears, take action?! I wish I would’ve known about Mel Robbins years ago! Have you heard of her? She became well known for a Ted talk she ROCKED (I love Tedx, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lp7E973zozc, and her title… “how to stop screwing yourself”). She has since gone on to commentate on CNN, speak in front of hundreds of audiences a year (more than any other female in America), AND write a book about this amazing tool she calls “the 5 second rule.” Simply by counting backwards 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 in your mind when fear or inaction interjects, you can shift your focus to simply BEGIN. I am going to leave this right here… https://melrobbins.com/the-5-second-rule/ … and I challenge you to begin. Begin by watching her talk. Your gut will lead you to her book and this five second tool that might just get you to the next level. Listen to it. Then start your own beginnings wherever your heart leads you!
